Cherrapunjee

Unlike Shillong, Cherrapunjee has still not been targeted by commercialization. It, therefore, retains an unspoilt charm that attracts nature lovers from around the world. The place was originally named as Sohra, and was pronounced by the British as "Churra". Cherrapunjee, meaning land of oranges, is home to beautiful waterfalls, caves, and living root bridges. The hills around Cherrapunjee do not have lush green vegetation, but is in the form of dense woods appearing in patches. One needs to visit the place to believe the richness and variety of the flora here.

Attractions

The Nohkalikai Waterfalls, which is the fourth highest fall in India, is among a popular tourist attraction. The ideal time to visit the fall is during the monsoon season. A flight of stairs take the tourists to the viewing points. Roaring on its way down, the waterfall has carved a waterhole where it falls.

Mawsmai Cave is another popular attraction in Cherrapunjee. The cave gives a thrilling experience with dark spooky feel. You can enjoy the minute details of the cave, and witness the nature's miracle at its best.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge is another must visit attraction of Cherrapunjee. Made using Indian Rubber Tree, the bridge is one of the popular attractions here. The two'tier bridge is more than 100 ft long, and has a carrying capacity of around 50 people at a time. Having Umshiang River flowing beneath the living root bridges, it has been estimated that these are around 500 to 600 years old.

Best time to Visit Cherrapunjee
Probably the only place in the country that sees one season throughout the year, Cherrapunjee is drenched in rain all season. It's advisable to avoid a visit to Cherrapunjee during the peak monsoon season. September to January are the best months to bask in the natural beauty of Cherrapunjee. The local festival of Nongkrem Dance celebrated during the months of October-November, attract good number of tourists.

How to Reach Cherrapunjee
By Air: Guwahati Airport is the nearest airport to Cherrapunjee, which is well connected to the rest of the country.

By Train: Guwahati acts as the nearest railhead to Cherrapunjee. Guwahati railway station is well connected to the entire country and regular trains carry passengers to and fro.

By Road: Buses for Cherrapunjee leave from the Sohra Bus Stand in the Bara Bazaar area of Shillong.
