Bodhgaya

One of the four holiest cities of Buddhist faith, the life of Gautam Buddha is associated with the small town of Bodhgaya. The city attracts numerous pilgrims seeking Nirvana. The religion of Buddhism was cemented at this very place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment under a bodhi tree and became Buddha. It is the simplicity of this temple town that makes it a perfect place to meditate and escape from all kinds of worldly sorrows.

Attractions

The Great Buddha Statue standing 80 ft high is one of the major attractions in Bodhgaya. This majestic and tranquil looking statue is made of sandstone blocks and red granite, and was inaugurated by the XIVth Dalai Lama on November 18, 1989. The majestic statue of Buddha meditating with his eyes closed and a divine glow on his face is enough to convert an atheist into theist.

Another major attraction here is the Mahabodhi Temple, built around the original Bodhi Tree. This temple looks like the original Stupa constructed by King Ashoka. The temple houses a life size statue of Buddha, meditating with his legs crossed. Visitors to the temple are awed by the beautifully craved stone railings encircling the temple complex.

The Bodhi tree, that holds great importance among the followers of Buddhism, is also among the popular attraction among the visitors. It is believed that after rigorous fasting for years, Gautam Buddha accepted milk and honey from a young woman. He then sat beneath the Bodhi Tree and decided not to move until he attained enlightenment. A special event, Bodhi Day is celebrated around this tree to celebrate Buddha's enlightenment.

Another popular attraction here is the Buddha Temple raised by Chinese Buddhist monks in the proximity of the Bodhi temple complex. The Buddha Temple beautifully showcases the Chinese architectural marvel in its interiors. The 200 year old Buddha statue here was brought all the way from China.

How to Reach Bodhgaya
By Air: Gaya is the nearest airport which is approximately 17 kilometres from the town of Bodh Gaya.

By Road: A main road connects the town of Bodh Gaya to the city of Gaya. One can opt for local bus services or decide to drive.

By Train: The nearest rail head is Gaya Junction, which is 13 kilometres away from Bodh Gaya.
